Tyre’s old port is the working harbour of Sour, still tucked against the ruins of the Phoenician island city on Lebanon’s southern coast. Fishing boats, the Egyptian harbour and the nearby Al Mina archaeological zone share the same waterfront that once sent cedar, purple dye and ships across the Mediterranean. Columns, baths and a crusader cathedral remain within a short walk of the quay, and the UNESCO site continues at Al-Bass across the isthmus. Come late in the day for the light on the water and the skyline of minarets and church towers. Tyre port is both a historic place and a living coastal neighbourhood, best combined with the hippodrome and a walk along the peninsula.
