Al Chalout is a historic landmark in the old fabric of Deir el Qamar, the former capital of Mount Lebanon in the Chouf. It belongs to the same walk as the midan, the Chehab serails and the town’s fountains: stone, a public setting and the dense mix of houses that grew up under the Maan and Chehab emirs. Because it is a local site rather than a fenced monument, the best way to see it is on foot, with time to notice portals, water and the slope of the lanes. Deir el Qamar rewards that pace. Visitors already at Saydet al Talleh or Dany Chamoun Square can include Al Chalout without a separate trip.
