Qalaat Barbar Agha at Iaal is the fortified residence of the Ottoman official Barbar Agha above the road inland from Tripoli. Strong walls, an upper position and a memory of early-nineteenth-century power in the north distinguish it from crusader castles such as Saint-Gilles in Tripoli. The building reads as an Ottoman strongman’s castle: domestic scale plus defence. Iaal village is the setting, with views toward the coast. Access can be informal; be careful on stairs and do not assume a staffed museum. It is a useful historic stop between Tripoli’s citadel and the mountain, and a different chapter from the crusader story.
