Guide to Baalbek Temple

Baalbek - Historical Places
Baalbek Temple is the vast Roman sanctuary at Baalbek in the Bekaa Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the largest temple complexes of the Roman world. Colossal podium stones, the six surviving columns of the Temple of Jupiter and the nearby temples of Bacchus and Venus still dominate the plain beneath the Anti-Lebanon range. The site was a sacred place long before Rome, then a Phoenician and Roman pilgrimage centre known as Heliopolis. A visit covers the propylaea, hexagonal courtyard, Great Court and the temples themselves, plus wide views over the Bekaa. It pairs naturally with the Roman quarry, the Temple of Bacchus and the smaller temples on the ridge. Baalbek remains Lebanon’s essential archaeological destination for Roman architecture and ancient history.
