The old port of Batroun is the small harbour that still defines this coastal town between Byblos and Tripoli. Fishing boats, stone quays and low warehouses sit beside a seafront of cafés, with the Phoenician sea wall and the old souk a few minutes’ walk inland. Batroun’s name is linked to the ancient port of Botrys, and the waterfront is the best place to see why the town has always faced the sea. Sunset is the busiest hour. Visitors combining Roman theatre ruins, St Stephen’s cathedral and Our Lady of the Sea can treat the port as the centre of the walk. It is a historic place that is still very much a working harbour.
