The Old Serail of Baaqline is the historic government house of this Chouf town, a stone civic building from the period when Baakline was an administrative centre of Mount Lebanon. Serails like this one held the local court, records and the representative of the emir or the later governor. It stands among the lanes that also lead to the Hamadeh Palace, the old presses and the town’s mosques and gathering places. The architecture is domestic in scale: a formal entrance, an upper floor and a façade meant to be read from the square. Visitors tracing institutions rather than only temples will find it a useful stop between Deir el Qamar and the Shouf reserve.
