The old souk of Batroun is the pedestrian market at the heart of the coastal town, a grid of stone lanes behind the port and the Phoenician sea wall. Tailors, spice shops, old houses and newer cafés share buildings that have been repaired many times but never really replaced. The souk is where Batroun’s Roman, medieval and Ottoman layers show up as doorways and street lines rather than as a fenced archaeological site. It is an easy stroll from the Roman theatre, St Stephen’s cathedral and the harbour, and a useful stop for anyone tracing historic towns on the north coast of Lebanon. Go in the late afternoon when the lanes are busiest.
