Welcome to Roman Quarry

The Roman quarry of Baalbek, a short distance from the temple complex, is where the colossal stones of Heliopolis were cut. The famous pregnant stone, Hajjar al Hubla, still lies in the bedrock, one of the largest blocks ever dressed by Roman masons, alongside other megaliths that never left the pit. Seeing the quarry makes the platform of the Temple of Jupiter believable. The visit is outdoors, informal and easily added before or after the UNESCO site and the Temple of Bacchus. There is little shade. Stand back from cut edges. For engineering history, this is as important as the temples themselves.
